Smart Beginnings of Greater Roanoke is a collaborative of community leaders from business, school systems, nonprofits and private individuals who are working together to ensure that every child in Greater Roanoke enters kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed in school and in life. The coalition was founded in 2007 and covers the counties of Roanoke, Botetourt, Craig, the cities of Salem and Roanoke, and the town of Vinton.

To improve the quality of early care and education in the Greater Roanoke region, SBGR focuses on several key areas:
  • Virginia Star Quality Initiative for childcare centers & preschools
  • Professional development for early childhood educators 
  • Parent Education (Classes, Home visiting & Monthly Newsletter)
  • Public Engagement and Community Awareness
