Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond, facilitated by the United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg and the Greater Richmond Chamber, is a coalition of over 100 public and private organizations, businesses, and citizens working to ensure that all children, age 0-5, are healthy, well-cared for, and ready to succeed.
This groundbreaking partnership between human service and business sectors owes a great deal of its success to the work of the founding organizations that merged to form the coalition as it stands today: Success By 6 (SB6), established locally in 1997 by United Way, and the Greater Richmond Chamber’s Youth Matters initiative. In 2007, with funding from the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation, this venture became one of a state-wide network of Smart Beginnings coalitions.
Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond is a catalyst for community change. Engaging hundreds of stakeholders, the coalition facilitated the development of the Regional Plan for Children’s School Readiness and now coordinates the work of more than 100 community partners to implement priority strategies in nationally recognized “readiness” areas:
- Ready Families: expansion of high-quality parent education and home visiting
- Ready Early Care and Education Services: Virginia Star Quality Initiative
- Ready Health Services: early developmental screening and positive social and emotional development
- Ready Schools: regional kindergarten readiness and registration campaign
- Ready Communities: education and advocacy about the importance of early childhood
